There are no current plans or dates for gas boilers to be entirely phased out and gas boilers will still be around after 2025!

From 2025 the government is planning to ban natural gas in new build homes only in an effort to reduce Carbon emissions. All other homes will still be able to install natural gas boilers for the foreseeable future.

Any gas boiler that you buy now will run on natural gas for it’s lifetime.

For the heating industry, removing carbon entirely poses a significant problem, mainly due to the fact that most UK homes run on natural gas. Replacing natural gas boilers with hydrogen gas may appear to be the simplest solution to the issue. Hydrogen gas is a carbon free fuel source and could become key to winning the battle to decarbonise heating and hot water in UK homes.

A hydrogen-ready boiler is a gas-fired heating boiler which is capable of burning either natural gas or pure (100%) hydrogen.

Reduce your carbon footprint and your bills!

Changes are coming and Worcester Bosch welcomes the concept of increase of green gas within the UK gas grid.

The entire new range of highly efficient Greenstar gas boilers are able to run on a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas? This ‘blend’ sees 20% of the fuel source being hydrogen gas, with the remaining 80% being natural gas.

This means, that when the government begins to increase the amount of ‘green gases’ into the UK gas grid, you can be confident your new gas boiler will run for its lifetime without any changes. When the time comes to switch to the hydrogen mix it will only take an hour!

“I am seriously impressed with Scott Findlay Plumbing & Heating team and the experience I had with my new boiler installation. The office team were very helpful and supportive whilst the team who installed and carried out the work exceeded my expectations. The guys were punctual, professional, they knew exactly what they were doing, worked very hard to meet and deliver the work on time and were very tidy and respectful of my property. I felt I could ask any question and that they cared. I would highly recommend this company!”

We couldn’t have been happier with your service from start to finish. Communication was excellent with quick replies to emails and messages sent regarding engineer arrival times etc. Your staff were really tremendous – thoroughly professional from the initial inspection to the actual installation; they were punctual, polite and really helpful. The work completed was exactly as advised and we were informed at all times about what was going on.

I would not hesitate to recommend your company

A McWhirter, Boiler Installation, Greenbank, EH10, Nov 2023

We are very happy with the work your engineers did. Their attention to detail is impressive and they always make sure that the customer is happy! I should also mention that they work VERY hard. They don’t stop from the moment they arrive until they leave, and do not leave until they have reached a point in the job where it can safely be left overnight. They were very conscious of leaving us with as little inconvenience as possible. We had no water pressure to speak of before, we do now and we will assume that the heating will be equally impressive once the cold weather comes back! Personally I am impressed that, as a business, you are taking on apprentices. I will certainly recommend you to others, my daughter has just bought a flat and I was very pleased to see that her new looking boiler has your name on it!

L Bell, Boiler Installation, Musselburgh, EH21, Apr 2022

Often when trades people enter your home it can feel like a mini invasion; but Scott Findlay keep disruption to a minimum and are punctual, quiet, tidy and friendly. My job was not straight forward, due to unexpected issues that arose from a previous installation (by another company) but all my concerns and questions were patiently answered by my installer Cameron who could not have been more helpful.

All dealings from initial enquiries onwards have been professional friendly and efficient. Would not hesitate to recommend.

A Dunnett, Boiler Installation, Pleasance, EH8, Aug 2022

The whole installation process went very smoothly, despite it being a large and complex setup involving more than 20 radiators. Our pipes were replaced with larger ones, and were inconspicuously lead to new locations. Our exterior stone walls were carefully patched with stone to conceal the large old vent and a neat hole cut nearby for the new one. All was done with the minimum of mess. Cameron and his team did a great job, causing us as little fuss as possible. All other trades they brought in did a first-class job. There were a couple of radiators that malfunctioned the following day, but they sent a guy very quickly and sorted them out within a couple of hours of my call.

We were very delighted with the whole thing, including their honesty in reducing the bill when the plasterer was not needed. The Hive controller and app are excellent. It will be great to be able to control the heating remotely when we're on holiday in the winter.

D Thomson, Boiler Installation, Craigentinny, EH7, Aug 2023

We were very happy with your work. The fitters were professional, helpful and courteous while in our home. The standard of their work was high, and although the job was tricky we had confidence in their ability to overcome the problems. They worked late on the second day to ensure that we had heating and hot water that night, which we really appreciated.

The office kept us well informed before the work commenced and as it progressed.

We would recommend your company to others and wouldn’t hesitate to use you again.

C Hutcheson, Boiler Installation, Newington, EH9, Nov 2022

I had been intending to get a few quotes before going ahead with a new boiler, but Claire was so helpful when I called that I didn’t even bother getting in touch with anyone else. Everyone else from your company has been equally excellent - Kevin, Brian and Ian were all professional and friendly and the quality of workmanship has been superb in every detail. I cannot find even a single tiny thing to complain about. I am very rarely happy to pay an invoice - but I’m delighted to say that the service I’ve received from your company has been worth every penny. Bravo for running such a great outfit!

Thank you to all involved.

Boiler Installation FAQs

Normally when replacing a combi boiler with another combi you’ll have heating and hot water as normal, except for a few short periods during the day. Occasionally when converting from a traditonsl system with a hot water cylinder to a combi, you may be without hot water overnight. If you’re converting from an old sytem boiler to a modern system boiler you shouldn’t be without heating or hot water.

May have to lift carpets amd flooring but in the vast majority of cases these will go back down without any issue. If we have any concerns this will be piunted out during the survey. Our experienced surveyors know what to look for which minimises the chance of any unforeseen issues ocuring. If other trades such as joiners, electricians or plasterers are required this is all included in the installation at no additional cost.

A very straightforward swap can take as little as a single day, with the majority of installations taking 2 days and even larger, more complicated ones taking a maximum of 3 days. Learn more about fitting a new boiler here.

Not at all, our engineers are incredibly experienced and they’ll look after your home as if it’s their own, so no ned to worry that you’ll come home to any surprises-other than a lovely new energy efficient boiler.

In 2007 it became law for installers to fit more efficient "condensing boilers" where the heat from the gases which escape up the flue is now used for warmth rather than being wasted. This means that if your boiler is very old it will not be efficient and is likely costing you more than it should.

Learn about boilers

Deciding which boiler will make an efficient and practical fit with your home and lifestyle can be confusing. The information below details the main system types, how they work, their advantages and what kind of homes they work best in.

If your new boiler is going to be fitted onto your existing system, please consider the cleanliness of your existing pipework and radiators as this could cause damage to your new boiler. It's essential that the system is cleansed appropriately in order to bring the water up the manufacturer's required standard.

A combination or ‘combi’ boiler is both a high efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler in a single compact unit. Combi boilers heat water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap, so you won’t need a hot water storage cylinder or a cold water storage tank in the roof space.

They are also very cost-effective and energy-efficient as water is heated instantly rather than being heated and then stored in a cylinder. An added benefit is that hot water is delivered at mains pressure, which means that you could get a powerful shower without the need for a separate pump.

  • Compact sizes make combi boilers perfect for smaller properties
  • Ideal where there is little or no loft space
  • No need for a hot water cylinder allows increased living space
  • No cold water storage tank frees up a loft for conversion
  • No risk of loft pipework freezing
  • Less pipework in the home makes installation typically cheaper

System boilers require a cylinder for storing hot water, however the major heating and hot water system components are built into the boiler itself, making it quicker and easier to install. In addition, there is no need for a tank in the loft, so it can be an option in a home with little or no loft space or where the space is earmarked for a conversion.

These boilers are also compatible with solar water heating systems, which deliver environmental benefits as well as lower energy bills.

  • Ideal for homes with more than one bathroom
  • Constant supply of hot water to any number of taps at the same time
  • No need for a loft tank, freeing up space and eliminating worries about leaks or frost damage
  • Economical to run
  • Built-in components makes installation quicker and neater

Regular boilers (sometimes known as traditional, conventional or heat only boilers) are ideally suited to homes that already have a traditional heating and hot water system which is linked to a separate hot water cylinder. These boilers also need a cold water storage tank in the loft to feed the hot water cylinder as well as a tank that maintains the water level of the central heating system.

A regular boiler may be the best option for replacing an existing boiler if the property has an older radiator system, as it might not be able to cope with the higher water pressure that is delivered by system or combi boilers.

  • Perfect for homes where a lot of hot water is used at the same time
  • Ideal where there are two or more bathrooms
  • A good option in areas where water pressure is low
  • Compatible with solar water heating systems for a lower carbon footprint and lower energy costs
